Thanks to Guido for taking photos of the gig.  Little did he know that he took several 1 second videos, which we've strung together here - enjoy!

Z104 Rock for Relief

On Sunday, September 18, several area bands including Wonderjack gathered at the State Theatre in Arlington to benefit the victims of the Hurricane Katrina ravaged Gulf Coast.

Organized by Jenni Chase of Z104 and Adam Simkin of entertainmentdc.com (who both did an excellent job of organizing and arranging a complex event in very short time), all proceeds from the event were presented to the Red Cross.

We arrived early to check out all the bands and lend the service of Dan's old bass amp (this amp is the equivalent of Jack Nicholson in "A Few Good Men"- old, mean, and it has very expressive eyebrows to boot) to the cause.

The show opened with Michael Jantz, a singer-songwriter with great vocal talent and a penchant for dedicating songs to mothers- his own, thankfully. Following were Sharif and Lloyd Dobbler Effect (a great combination of strong vocals, fun jams, and an energetic percussionist), then Barakus.   Viki Nova, who could be seen treating her sore throat with honey straight out of the little bottle shaped like a bear- I think many male audience members wished they could be that bear- played a great set of catchy rock tunes that are musically interesting as well.

WJ went on next. The large stage of the State Theatre is very conducive to acting like pompous rock stars, so that's what we did. After Dan threw an emtpy bottle of Jack Daniels at Jenni Chase and Craig signed several girls' chests between songs, we were finally forced out of the venue. Randy and I handed out black eyes to some of the bouncers along the way (Randy and I are a tag team wrestling duo every other weekend known as "Fury of the WASPs". Randy's fists are like jackhammers of loving pain).

I'm sure smart readers like yourself realize that none of that last paragraph actually happened.  Or did it.  Hmmm.

What did happen was one of the most energetic sets we've had to date. A new song (as yet untitled) had its live debut to tremendous fanfare and Craig's voice was in excellent form- these are the gigs where you stay excited for hours afterwards and can't sleep later that night. Since this gig was a Sunday and I didn't sleep at all Sunday night, Monday morning at work was awesome.

Junkfood and Evenout closed out the night- these are two very polished professional bands that I can recommend to anyone that likes hard rock. We saw several familiar faces in the crowd and would like to thank them for coming out and supporting such a great cause. Our thanks also goes out to the State Theatre, Jenni and Adam (who were gracious and supportive to every band there- I don't think many people can appreciate how difficult it is to handle 7 bands with different needs and have the whole event run like clockwork), and all the other bands that participated. It was great day for a great cause and we are proud to have been a part of it.
